About Civil Engineering

Civil Engineering is considered to be the oldest Engineering discipline. It is believed to have commenced after 4000 BC in ancient Egypt and Mesopotamia when humans started to abandon the nomadic existence and make permanent settlements . It deals with the design , construction and maintenance of building, bridges , roads, canals , dams etc. The three year diploma course in Civil Engineering offered by our institute is designed to impart theoretical knowledge.Students are sent to various reputed construction companies and Civil Engineering firms during fifth and eighth semesters. The student is thoroughly prepared with the basic knowledge of several sub disciplines of Civil Engineering including Structural Engineering , Environmental Engineering, Geo-Technical Engineering, Water resource Engineering , Material Engineering and Surveying.

Provide knowledge and tools that enable civil engineering to evolve away from empirical ad hoc approaches into strategies based on scientifically grounded analysis, using fundamental mechanics, integrating uncertainty, and navigating the conflicting objectives inherent in successful Civil Engineering design.

PROGRAMME OUTCOMES

Graduates of Civil Engineering Programme will have the ability
  • An ability to apply knowledge of computing, mathematical foundations, algorithmic principles, and civil engineering theory in design of computer-based systems to real-world problems.
  • The ability to practice civil engineering using up-to-date techniques, skills, and tools as a result of life-long learning ability to design and conduct experiments, as well as to analyze and interpret data.
  • An ability to design, implement, and evaluate a field program to meet desired needs, within realistic constraints such as economic, environmental, social, political, health and safety, manufacturability, and sustainability.
  • An ability to design a system or component to satisfy stated or code requirements of Civil Engineering.
  • An ability to analyze a problem, and identify, formulate and use the appropriate computing and civil engineering requirements for obtaining its solution.
  • An understanding of professional, ethical, legal, security and social issues and responsibilities. An ability to communicate effectively, both in writing and orally.
  • The broad education necessary to analyze the local and global impact of computing and engineering solutions on individuals, organizations, and society.

Learning process and methodology

Project Work

  • All the final year students are required to undergo a major project in their final academic semester.
  • Both the project works are held under the supervision of senior faculty members.
  • The project may be sponsored or facilitated by the industry.

Interaction with the Industry

We believe that engineering education is incomplete without the support and collaboration of the industry. For this purpose, the department has developed strong linkages with the industry and renowned academic institutions. The interfacing with the industry helps the students in the following areas:
  • Industrial visits- wherein the students get an opportunity to see the real application of engineering.
  • Expert lectures- The experts from various fields share their expertise and knowledge with the faculty and the students.
  • Workshops on specific technologies- The students get a hand on experience in these workshops
  • Conferences & Symposiums- The students get an opportunity to explore their research potential
  • Institutional & Industrial Training- Interfacing with the industry opens up multidimensional avenues for the students

For all the aforesaid purposes, students are actively involved. The students have been identified as student coordinators who are working together in order to meet these objectives. Besides, these activities also inculcates managerial & leadership qualities in the students. The student coordinators are well guided and supported by two faculty members of the department who have been identified as industrial coordinators.

Facilities

Civil Engineering is a professional Engineering discipline that deals with the design, construction, maintenance of the physical and naturally built environment, including works such as bridges, roads, canals, dams and buildings. We started the Civil Engineering branch in the year 2010.The aim of the department is to impart quality education and groom budding civil engineers to be effective contributor to the society, nation and the world as a whole. Faculty as well students in the department, are encouraged to keep themselves abreast with latest advancements in the field of civil Engineering through various activities at academic front. Department provides ample opportunities to its students for developing their organization skills and personality development through various extra-mural and co-curricular activities as well.

Concrete Lab

Our concrete technology laboratory has advanced instruments which are used to assess the strength durability and other properties of concrete. We also perform concrete mix design incorporating cementacious materials like fly ash and fibre reinforcing materials.

Strength of Materials Lab

The Strength of Materials laboratory equipped with 100T computerized Universal Testing Machine(UTM),Impact Testing Machine, Hardness testing and Tile abrasion machines is used for various tests like tensile, compressive and flexural strength, hardness of metals and abrasive resistance of tiles.

Survey Lab

The Survey Lab is equipped with Compass, Levels, Theodolites and also the advanced computerized Total Station with Auto Civil software.

Hydraulics Lab

The Hydraulics Lab consists of Hydraulic bench, Reynolds apparatus, Bernoulli's apparatus, Tilting Flume etc.

Environmental Lab

The Environmental Lab established in the academic year 08-09 has all the equipments and facilities as required by the revised curriculum.
