Department of Mechanical Engineering

Department offers undergraduate program (B.Tech.) in Mechanical Engineering and Postgraduate program (M.Tech.) in Mechanical Engineering. It is one of the largest department of the institute with intake of 90 students for undergraduate course and 30 students for post graduate course.

    I feel ecstatic to introduce you to Department of Mechanical Engineering, which is the foundation of Engineers. Department of Mechanical Engineering strives for increasing the knowledge, enhancing the critical thinking, ability to change information into knowledge and power of analyzing the things technically of each and every individual of ever changing society through students.

    We always intend to impart knowledge through a closed knit family of highly competent faculty. Department of Mechanical Engineering plays a vital role in an engineering college catering to the teaching of Mechanical and Humanities courses for engineering students.

    Our Laboratories have been very well established not only to cover complete syllabus but to motivate students to learn beyond the syllabus which definitely develops complete knowledge of the subject (both the practical and theoretical depth of knowledge) and develop skill sets of students to become promising engineers in future.   • Program Educational Objectives

    Under the undergraduate Mechanical Engineering programme the objectives and aims to produce qualified Mechanical Engineers who will:

    • Apply technical knowledge and skills as Mechanical Engineers to provide the solutions for the industries and government organizations.
    • Utilize effective communication, team, and project management skills to work productively within their professions and communities.
    • Conduct themselves in a responsible, professional and ethical manner.
    • Inculcate an attitude for life-long learning process.

    PROGRAMME OUTCOMES

    Program Outcomes are the expected qualities of a graduating engineer. They represent the views of industry and institute, and the needs of jobs performed by graduates and are listed below for the graduates to:
    • Acquire an ability to identify, formulate and solve Mechanical engineering problems.
    • Acquire an ability to design and conduct experiments and analyze and interpret data related to Mechanical Engineering.
    • Acquire skills to use modern mechanical engineering tools, software and equipment to analyze problems.
    • Acquire knowledge of professional and ethical responsibilities and develop an understanding of impact of mechanical engineering solutions on the society.
    • Communicate effectively both verbal and written, as an individual or as a leader.
    • Acquire awareness of contemporary issues.
  • Learning process and methodology

    Industrial Training(2 months)

    • The students spend their entire semester (6th) in an industry of relevance for their 2 months industrial training.
    • The student is permitted to join the training only if it is approved by the department.
    • During the course of the training, faculty visits the industry to monitor the performance and conduct of the students working as trainees.
    • Students submit a report on the conduct of training and also give a seminar/presentation in the class.
    • Training awards are based on performance in training, feedback report of the faculty, training manager, training report, mid semester report, daily diary, viva voce conducted by external examiner besides the value addition in students to increase their professional competence.

    Project Work

    • All the final year students are required to undergo a major project in their final academic semester.
    • Both the project works are held under the supervision of senior faculty members.
    • The project may be sponsored or facilitated by the industry.

    Interaction with the Industry

    We believe that engineering education is incomplete without the support and collaboration of the industry. For this purpose, the department has developed strong linkages with the industry and renowned academic institutions. The interfacing with the industry helps the students in the following areas:
    • Industrial visits- wherein the students get an opportunity to see the real application of engineering.
    • Expert lectures- The experts from various fields share their expertise and knowledge with the faculty and the students.
    • Workshops on specific technologies- The students get a hand on experience in these workshops
    • Conferences & Symposiums- The students get an opportunity to explore their research potential
    • Institutional & Industrial Training- Interfacing with the industry opens up multidimensional avenues for the students

    For all the aforesaid purposes, students are actively involved. The students have been identified as student coordinators who are working together in order to meet these objectives. Besides, these activities also inculcates managerial & leadership qualities in the students. The student coordinators are well guided and supported by two faculty members of the department who have been identified as industrial coordinators.

  • Placements

    The department supports and coordinates with the Centralized Training & Placement Cell of LR group for all placement related activities viz. interview preparation, inviting the companies for the placement drives and conduct of the same.

    For all the aforesaid purposes, students are actively involved. The students have been identified as student coordinators who are working together in order to meet these objectives. Besides, these activities also inculcates managerial & leadership qualities in the students. The student coordinators are well guided and supported by two faculty members of the department who have been identified as industrial coordinators.

  • Facilities

    Mechanical Engineering is a core branch of engineering. It provides exposure to diversified engineering fields. Mechanical Engineers are not only required in hard core Mechanical Industries, but also in Chemical, Software, Fertilizers and in Government sectors like Engineering Services, Army, Navy, Air Force, Power Plants etc. The Department of Mechanical Engineering at L.R.I.E.T. is well equipped with the latest laboratories and workshops, handled by highly qualified and experienced faculty members. The department has adopted the latest teaching learning processes like Power Point Presentations, Over Head Projectors, Seminars, Industrial Visits, and Expert Lectures from Industry personnel etc. We take special efforts to reduce the gap between Industry and Institute.


    Workshop

    The mechanical engineering workshop consists of – Machine shop, Smithy shop, Foundry shop, Welding shop, Carpentry shop and Fitting shop. All this shops have the latest machinery and apart from the regular curriculum work, students are encouraged to work in these shops for the various types of project work.

    Automobile Lab

    L.R.I.E.T. has a state of the art Automobile lab. We have a Maruti-800, a Tata Indica Diesel, a Maruti Omni (Rear wheel drive) and a Gypsy (4wheel drive) instead of study models. The purpose of this lab is to provide the students in-depth knowledge of the working of automobiles and there is no better way than working on an actual machine rather than a model.

    Strength of Materials/Material Science Lab

    In this lab students perform various tests to study the stresses produced in the materials due to external loads. They also study the properties and molecular structure of various materials. We have a Universal Testing Machine, Rockwell and Brinell Hardness testing machines, Impact testing machine, Torsion testing machine etc. on which students perform the experiments and learn about the materials and their stress analysis.

    Internal Combustion Engines Lab

    The internal combustion engine laboratory consists of various engine-dynamometer test stands. The facilities include multi-cylinder diesel engines, one multi-cylinder petrol engine and various models to study the working of internal combustion engines. The laboratory also has an emission analyzer that can measure low-level exhaust emissions.

    Theory of Machines Lab

    This laboratory works in the field of application of the basic concepts of dynamic of machines parts and working principles of the mechanical elements. In this laboratory we teach the students how input motion can be converted into the desired output motion using linkages.

    Refrigeration & Air Conditioning Lab

    Refrigeration and Air Conditioning is one of the most important fields in the current scenario. Considering the global warming phenomenon, it has become even more important for creating suitable environment in buildings, preserving food items etc. In this laboratory students learn the various principles behind the refrigeration and air conditioning systems by performing experiments on Ice plant trainer, window A.C., Vapor compression refrigeration system, household refrigerators etc. to enhance their knowledge.

    Heat Transfer and Heat Power Engineering Lab

    The objective of this laboratory is to provide the student a good environment to understand some very important concepts and applications of Heat Transfer. These concepts are necessary to understand how the typical Heat transfer processes takes place. These fundamentals will be used to link the phenomenological Heat transfer processes taking place in different engineering equipment such as boilers condensers etc.
